Vox Pop Evaluation

My aim for doing the Vox Pop Evaluation was to  assess the success of my first research task and to analyse the responses and come to a decision.

Our aim was to ask each person the same question in order to get a variety of answers and opinions on the given subject.

These are the questions that we assked:
1. Do you watch music vids?
2. What is your favorite music video?
3. What do you like about music Videos?
4. What makes a great music video?
5. Where do you watch music videos?

We conducted this VoxPop and my analyses to each questions asked are as follow;

-  ' Do you watch music videos?' : For this it was very easy and straight forward for me to find my answer mainly got the response ' yes i do watch music videos' or 'no i don't'

- 'What is your favourtie music video?' :
- 'What do you like about music videos?' and ' What makes a good music video?' : Here i was able to start getting them to give me open ended replies to elaborte more so i will take their opinions into account when producing my own music video.

Conducting the Vox Pop I was both actually answering questions and filming parts of it this is because me and a few class friends decided to join up otgether and do it as a team seen as both our music for our videos were both in the same type of genre...
Whilst filming i made sure that i positioned the individuals properly (medium shot)  on the camera keeping it steady on the tripod.

In conclusion this Vox Pop task was successful and i am pleased with my results, it has given me an insight of dofferent types of preferences for music videos which i will take into account.

Vox Pops

Audience Research;
Vox 'populi' which is in Latin means voice of the people. Usually it is recorded in an outdoor setting , and the interviewees usually give spontaneous opinions in a chance encounter.

How it is conducted;
Each person is asked the same question, the aim is to get a variety of answers and opinions on any given topic/subject.
Journalists are usually instructed to approach a wide range of people to get varied answers from different perspectives.

Our Research
We prepared everyone with the questions we were going to ask them which are as follow:
- Do you watch music videos?
- what is your favourite music video?
- what do you like about music videos?
- What makes a great music video?
- where do you watch music videos?

When we get to editing we need to add a title at the beginning and include all the participants names

Oraganic + Synthetic

Artists can be divided into two catergories

  • Organic: its used to describe bands where the music comes from first. It often means that it appeals to a niche, but can appeal to a mass audience too.

  • Synthetic: this refers to the 'X-Factor' methodology. A gap in the market is identified and it is then exploited by the development of music, and often the artist, to suit this gap

Money is the ultimate goal in this opperation, acts such as The Spice girls, JLS, One Direction are examples of manufactured artists.

Music Industry

The music industry is dominated by dominated by four multi national corporations:
- Universal

- Sony Music

- Warner Brothers

- EMI

The Majority of these are backed by conglomerates with stakes in other vindustries such as; films, TV and Electronics.

Major- Independents
This is a series of smaller subsidiary companies in order to reach different kinds of audiences in different kinds of genre.
- Columbia
- Island
-Syco
-Virgin

Independents
There are a massive number of small companies with hardly any or no financial connections to the majors.
these companies concentrate on smaller number of acts within a specialised niches in the industries. An example of a highly successful independent in 'Domino Records'

Synergy

it means that a media institution divides a media product into other formats for people to access, like, Walt Disney films then divide into DVD formats, video games, soundtracks, books, toys, socks, clothes, EVERYTHING to make a profit.

Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash - Hurt -2003

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aF9AJm0RFc

This was a huge breaker, because it was Johnny's last song he sang before he died and literally straight after he made this song he pasted away.

Elton John

Elton John - 'i want love'
This video clip was done with no editing, the camera was just following John. The significance of this song is that Elton John was in prison for drugs, so he came out of rehab just to shoot this video.

Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock - Rockit

MTV were reluctant to show black artists in the early 1980's, the 'Rockit' video cleverly got round this by being innovative and still showing Herbie Hancock

Bronski

Small Town Boy - Bronski Beat 1984
This music video was significant because its was the first video to have a gay come out, this time was during when Elton John got married.
